Drunk driving is a major issue in Minnesota and throughout the United States, as roughly one in every three traffic fatalities involves a drunk driver, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In an order to learn more about who is driving drunk, a team of researchers at Insurify used its database of more than 97 million vehicles to identify the 10 vehicles with the highest share of drivers with a DUI on their record. In today’s blog, we take a closer look at the 10 most common vehicles for those drivers with a previous DUI on their record.
Most Common DUI Cars
Let’s take a look at the top 10 list for the most common vehicles for people with a DUI on their record in America, and share some additional facts about the research.
1. Buick Envista (72.1 out of 1,000 drivers reporting at least one DUI conviction on their record).
2. Buick Encore GX (58.7 out of 1,000).
3. Chevrolet Bolt EV (40.6 out of 1,000).
4. Chevrolet Astro (29.9 out of 1,000).
5. Chevrolet Blazer (28.1 out of 1,000).
6. Jaguar XF (27.5 out of 1,000).
7. Buick Enclave (22.8 out of 1,000).
8. Volkswagon New Beetle (17.4 out of 1,000).
9. Chrysler Pacifica (17.3 out of 1,000).
10. Ford Bronco (16.8 out of 1,000).
Other facts from the study include:
- Buick drivers take home the top two spots on the list.
- 6.4 out of 1,000 drivers reported a DUI on their driving record in 2024, meaning a driver of a Buick Envista was more than 11 times more likely to have a DUI on their record than the average driver.
- Eight of the top 10 vehicles on the list are American-made, with Chevrolet having three separate models on the list.
- The Jaguar XF is the most expensive vehicle on the list, with a Kelley Blue Book price tag of $51,075.
- Five of the 10 vehicles on the list are SUVs, and two are minivans.
- Drivers with a DUI paid an average of $4,176 for full-coverage car insurance compared to $2,532 for someone with a clean record.
Of course, if you happen to drive one of these vehicles, police can’t just pull you over to see if you’re under the influence without evidence of a tangible traffic crime. However, if you do drive own of these vehicles, perhaps make it a point to always avoid drinking and driving so you don’t become another statistic!
