An ICE agent stationed in Minnesota as part of the federal immigration surge earlier this year has been charged with felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon after allegedly pointing a gun at the heads of two civilians in a vehicle earlier this month.
Gregory Donnell Morgan Jr. was officially charged with two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, one count for each victim. According to the criminal complaint, Morgan was driving an SUV with no markings when he pulled up to another vehicle and “pointed his duty weapon at both victims while continuing to drive illegally on the shoulder” of a highway.
For “a federal agent, our opinion is that illegally driving on a shoulder, pulling up to a car and pointing a gun at the heads of two community members who are not doing anything at the time is well beyond the scope of their authority,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty.
Trying To Pass Slowed Traffic
It is believed that Morgan was attempting to pass slower traffic on the shoulder, and when the victims briefly moved their vehicle towards the shoulder to stop him from jumping traffic, Morgan pulled out his firearm before rolling down his window and pointing it at the driver and passenger. Minnesota State Patrol investigators interviewed Morgan the next day, and he admitted to drawing his service weapon and pointing it at the other vehicle.
“Driving while pointing a weapon out of your moving vehicle at the victims, who were in another moving vehicle, could have led to yet another disastrous incident in a community that has already suffered too many,” Moriarty said.
Law enforcement eventually decided to pursue felony charges against Morgan, and a warrant is out for his arrest.
This is just another situation where ICE agents think they are above the law and the public. A firearm should never be used to intimidate members of the community, especially when there is no just reason for unholstering it. This community is already hurting enough from the two civilians deaths at the hands of ICE agents, and this easily could have been another situation that was unnecessarily escalated by federal agents until another member of the public was dead. Given that Morgan admitted to the act, it certainly seems like charges were warranted in this situation.
