Halloween night is Friday, and when the holiday falls on or around a weekend, police usually bulk up their operation to ensure Trick or Treaters and drivers can stay safe. And while we haven’t heard an official announcement yet from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, it’s safe to assume that police will have extra enforcement in neighborhoods and on highways to look for dangerous driving behaviors and drunk drivers.
In the past, more than 300 law enforcement agencies across the state came together as part of a coordinated extra enforcement campaign over the Halloween holiday weekend, and we expect something similar to happen this weekend. The fact that the holiday falls on a Friday means that there is likely to be even more foot and vehicle traffic around the Twin Cities on Halloween and throughout the weekend, which means police will need to be ready to respond appropriately.
It’s never wise to drink and drive, but this weekend is probably one of the worst weekends of the year to make that mistake. Kids will be running all over neighborhoods as they Trick or Treat, and unpredictable kids in dark costumes are hard enough to navigate when you’re fully focused on the road. Police will also be out with extra enforcement, so it’s even more likely that a minor infraction or a vehicle issue like a broken tail light will be spotted and result in a traffic stop.
