The annual crime summary report put together by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) revealed that all major categories of reported crime were down compared to the previous year, with the most significant drops coming in the Twin Cities metro area. We take a closer look at the latest crime report in today’s blog.
Breaking Down The Latest Crime Report
According to the 2025 crime report, Minnesota experienced a wonderful reduction in many criminal activities, including:
- A 23% reduction in murders compared to 2024, and a 35% decrease compared to 2021.
- Violent crime fell by 14% across the seven counties of the Twin Cities metro area.
- Violent crime fell by 9% across the other 80 counties across Minnesota.
- Violent crime dipped to 226 per 100,000, the lowest rate since 2019.
- Robbery crimes declined 27%.
- Aggravated assault reports dropped 11%.
- Rape reports fell 1.9%.
- Vehicle theft dipped 22.4%.
- Carjackings declined 31%.
- Property theft fell 9.7%.
- Crimes of bias dipped 1.75%.
- Arson cases dropped 15%.
These decreases fall in line with what we’re seeing on a national scale. Numbers released by the FBI showcase that murders and non-negligent manslaughter reports fell 18.1% compared to 2024. Rape declined 7.6%, aggravated assaults fell 7.2% and robbery cases dropped 18.5% nationally.
Now, that’s not to say that we’re living in a perfect Minnesota, but it is encouraging that the numbers are trending in the right direction. However, police are aware that not all crimes are reported, especially violent crimes or sexual assaults, so it’s unlikely that the BCA report is a perfectly accurate encapsulation of the total scope of crime across the state. It’s wonderful to see reported crimes drop year over year for all major crime categories, and hopefully these trends continue in 2026!
