If you’re planning to head to the cabin or travel to visit friends or family over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, be sure to follow the rules of the road, as police throughout Minnesota will be out with extra enforcement to help keep the roads safe.
If this year’s enforcement period is anything like year’s past, more than 300 agencies throughout Minnesota will be conducting extra enforcement patrols leading up to and throughout the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Some agencies have already announced that they are taking part in the extra enforcement period, as authorities in Olmsted County have announced that they’ll be conducting speed checks on July 3rd. They went even further in announcing which highways they’ll be targeting on Thursday, July 3. Olmsted County authorities will have an added presence that day on highways 14, 19 and 60 as part of a larger speed saturation enforcement period taking place at that time.
“Our goal is that every driver operates their vehicle safely, drives the posted speed limit and adjusts their speed to the conditions. But if drivers do not, we will take appropriate action to keep this a safe summer on our roadways for everyone. Our deepest concern is your safety and saving lives,” authorities noted in a press release about the enforcement.
Statewide Crackdown
The Fourth of July holiday is one of the most dangerous weekends on roads in Minnesota. The good weather means people can drive at faster spends, the holiday weekend means more people will be on the roads, and the extended time off could lead to more people celebrating with alcohol, all of which can make our roads much more deadly.
To combat this, agencies all across Minnesota will be conducting extra patrols to look for four specific driving violations. The extra enforcement period will focus on:
- Speeding
- Drunk Driving
- Distracted Driving
- Unbelted Driving
If authorities spot you doing any of these dangerous driving maneuvers, expect to be pulled over and given a ticket or arrested. It’s unlikely that warnings will be handed out, so use this blog as your warning and make smart decisions behind the wheel if you’ll be traveling for the Fourth of July.
