The Edina Green battled through a tough District 6 Peewee B1 Bracket and emerged victorious as the District 6 Champions on Sunday!
The Edina Green faced an uphill battle on their way to another district championship, as they were slotted as the #5 seed in the 12-team district tournament. They dispatched #8 seed Chaska/Chanhassen Purple 3-2 last Saturday before taking down #4 seed Prior Lake Savage Gold by a score of 5-1 on Sunday. That win earned them a date with top seeded Prior Lake Savage Navy, and the boys were in top form, bringing home a win by the score of 8-2.
The win earned the Green a couple of days off before their next match against a familiar foe, the Edina White, with a trip to the championship game on the line. A tense and hard-fought game ensued, and like Team USA in the Gold Medal game, the Edina Green brought home a 2-1 victory in overtime. However, Edina White worked their way through the secondary bracket and ended up in the championship game against the Green, needing to beat them in two consecutive games if they wanted to win the D6 Championship. Edina White emerged victorious on Saturday, setting up a winner-take-all final on Sunday. The tension of a hard-fought game was lifted when Edina Green struck first, and while they would eventually put the game away with two more goals, Avery Appelman was especially proud of his goaltender who put up a shutout in a 3-0 victory over their in-town rivals.
“We teach our kids to be savages,” said goalie coach Avery about the Edina Green’s performance. “We want them to be aggressive, to never be outworked and to play for the name on the front of their jersey and not the one on their back. We teach our kids to be mentally tough, and it’s never easy, but watching these young men develop skills on and off the ice that they’ll use for the rest of their life is incredibly rewarding.”
What’s Next For Edina Green?
Taking home the District 6 Championship earned the Edina Green a slot in the East Region tournament where they’ll look to earn a second consecutive trip to the state tournament. They will take on Mahtomedi in the first game of the regional tournament on Friday at noon, and their second game will be on Saturday regardless of how Friday’s contest turns out. We’ll know by Sunday evening which two teams from the East Region have earned a place in the State Tournament.
