BMW drivers already have to endure plenty of preconceived beliefs about their driving abilities from others on the road, and the latest study won’t do them any favors either. According to a new study from LendingTree, BMW owners were the most likely group to be arrested and charged with driving under the influence.
For the study, researchers used auto insurance data to better understand which drivers were most likely to be stopped for DWI. Here’s a look at the DUI rate per 1,000 drivers in America’s biggest cities based on vehicle type:
1. BMW – 3.09
2. Ram – 3.00
3. Acura 2.69
4. Audi – 2,42
5. Volvo 2.42
DWIs By Vehicle Type
On the other side of the spectrum, Mercury drivers carried the lowest risk of DWI rate, at 0.86 per 1,000 drivers. This was followed by Land Rover (1.16) and Lincoln (1.16).
Other interesting findings from the study include:
- Gen Z drivers (aged 19-27) were the group with the highest DUI rate by age group (2.62 per 1,000), following by Millennials (2.4 per 1,000 drivers).
- The silent generation (79-95) had the lowest rate of DUI, at just 0.21 per 1,000 drivers.
- Omaha, Nebraska had the highest DUI rate of the 50 major cities studied.
- Chicago, Illinois had the lowest DUI rate of the 50 largest American cities, with just 0.45 DUIs per 1,000 drivers, followed by Tulsa, Oklahoma (0.65) and Miami, Florida (0.66).
It’s no real surprise that younger people are getting more DUIs than older individuals, but the findings about which car models get the most DUIs are interesting.
