Drunk driving is a problem across the state and throughout the entire United States, but some areas are worse than others. In fact, by looking at the data, Minnesota officials were able to figure out which 15 counties were considered the most dangerous for drunk driving here in the state. Recently, they announced that law enforcement officials would be conducting extra DUI patrols throughout the summer in these 15 counties. Below, we take a closer look at which counties made the list and what to expect from the enhanced DUI patrols.
Counties In Minnesota With The Most DUIs
According to the data, from 2014 to 2018, 52 percent of all drunk driving deaths in Minnesota took place in these 15 counties. Similarly, 982 people were seriously injured in alcohol-related crashes in these 15 counties out of 1,657 serious injuries statewide. But which counties made the list? As you might have guessed, a number of them are in the metro area, but officers plan to add extra patrols in all of these 15 counties throughout the summer.
The 15 most dangerous counties for drunk driving based on the data are:
- Hennepin
- Ramsey
- Anoka
- St. Louis
- Dakota
- Washington
- Stearns
- Sherburne
- Olmsted
- Wright
- Rice
- Cass
- Becker
- Scott
- Otter Tail
Even if you don’t reside in one of these counties, know that police all across the state will be keeping their eyes out for drunk drivers throughout the summer. There tends to be a statewide push to prevent drunk driving between the “100 most dangerous days on the roads,” which runs roughly from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This means there will be an added police presence during peak drunk driving times and in places you might not expect an officer to be waiting. Even if you’re just heading a mile down the road, make sure you have a sober driver, because police will be out in full force all summer long.
