A Clearwater man was arrested and charged with a slew of crimes after deciding to make a McDonald’s run while over the limit.
It all began when Ronald Koopmeiners decided to make a food run around 3:30 p.m. last Wednesday in St. Cloud. A driver witnessed Koopmeiners driving “all over the road” and told police the vehicle had made a pit stop at a nearby McDonald’s. The caller kept watch on Koopmeiners, and told police that after getting his order, Koopmeiners ran a red light as he left the restaurant.
Police caught up to Koopmeiners on County Road 75 and attempted to make a traffic stop. However, instead of pulling over, Koopmeiners sped up and repeatedly crossed both the center line and the fog line. Police followed him to his house, where he drove up his unplowed driveway and into his garage. Once parked, a Stearns County sergeant approached the vehicle and placed Koopmeiners under arrest.
He Was Hungry
Koopmeiners was officially charged with felony fleeing police, 2nd degree DWI and driving after cancellation. A blood alcohol test revealed that he was operating with a BAC of .24, or three times the legal limit, hence the upgraded DWI charge.
When interviewed by police, Koopmeiners said he didn’t stop when police turned on their signal lights because he figured he was going to be arrested and didn’t want to have his vehicle towed. He said he went on his drunken joyride because he was hungry, as evidenced by the two Big Mac sandwiches that he ordered. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office said that he finished about half of a sandwich, while the rest was “all over the cab of the truck.”
It’s uncertain if Koopmeiners has legal representation, but it’s clear that he’s facing some very serious charges, including an upgraded DWI because his BAC was above 0.16. It seems like this is going to end up being a very costly McDonald’s run for the defendant.
