March Madness is here again, which means it’s once again time for our annual March Madness crime bracket. Last year we looked at data about violent crime on college campuses. This year, and since information about a vast majority of universities is scarce, we’ve decided to look at the same data as last year, but focus on aggravated assault crimes. So here’s a look at aggravated assaults per capita on college campuses, and per the rules of the previous years, the school with the most aggravated assaults advanced in the bracket below. If a school is not listed, it will not advance.
Here’s a look at the bracket:
Here are some tidbits from the bracket:
- Three 16-seeds advanced out of the first round.
- West Virginia, the tournament champion, averaged one aggravated assault per every 945 students, the only school under 1 assault per every 2,000 students.
- California (Fresno State and Cal) and Virginia (Hampton and VCU) are the only two states with multiple teams in the Elite Eight.
- There were 16 upsets in the first round, 5 upsets in the second round, 5 upsets in the Sweet 16, but no upsets in the rest of the tournament.
