According to statistics released from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the number of drivers who have been arrested for driving while intoxicated has increased nearly 11 percent in 2022 compared to the same timeframe in 2021.
The most recent data from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety shows that 18,251 suspects have been arrested for DWI in 2021, and a decent chunk of those arrests were made during the recent drunk driving enforcement campaign. If you are a frequent reader of our blog, you know that we announced this crackdown a few times and warned readers to make smart decisions if they were going to be consuming alcohol in the near future.
Apparently, our word of warning didn’t reverberate throughout the Twin Cities like we had hoped, as authorities made 1,265 arrests during the crackdown, which ran from Aug. 19 through Labor day. That’s up more than 10 percent from last year when a similar campaign netted 1,145 DWI arrests.
DWI Arrest Data
Here’s a closer look at some additional data from the Labor Day DWI crackdown:
- In the Twin Cities metro area, the Golden Valley district of the Minnesota State Patrol recorded the most arrests during the campaign, with 89 drunk driving suspects arrested.
- The Hubbard County Sherrif’s Office recorded 35 arrests, which was the most of any agency in greater Minnesota during the Labor Day campaign.
- A Big Lake driver was arrested for DWI after driving their car into someone else’s home, while a driver in Chisago County earned a DWI after rolling their vehicle with their two-year-old inside.
- The highest BAC during the campaign was recorded by the Winona Police Department (0.37), followed closely by Mankato Department of Public Safety Police (0.36) and the Ramsey Police Department (0.35).
Needless to say, drunk driving is still a major problem here in Minnesota, even when police let the public know that they will be out with extra emphasis looking for inebriated drivers. We’d be fine with a downturn in business if it meant that more people were making smart decisions behind the wheel, but despite our best efforts in warning drivers, it looks like we’ll have some job security for the foreseeable future!
