According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, the 4th of July is the deadliest single day of the year. Drunk driving has typically accounted for 30 percent of traffic deaths in Minnesota, but that number rose to an average of 65 percent on the Fourth of July between 2008 and 2012.
Historically, the 4th of July weekend has been one of the most dangerous holidays for drivers on Minnesota roads. Between 2004 and 2014 there were 4,585 car crashes on Independence Day, with 5,224 drivers being cited for DWI. Take a look at the chart below to see how the 4th of July weekend compares to other holidays. As you can see, the weekend of the 4th led all holidays in crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

As is expected for a holiday weekend, Minnesota will be increasing DWI patrols on both its roads and its lakes. So whether it’s a barbeque with the family or taking the boat for a cruise on the lake, please do the safe and responsible thing by finding a sober driver.
Here is a list of ways you ensure that you stay safe and out of trouble after celebrating Independence Day. More info on finding a safe ride home can be found here. Below are some additional tips:
- Plan a sober ride
- Grab a cab or Uber
- Bus or Light Rail
- Walk
Those who will be boating this weekend may want to take a look at our recent blog on “Operation Dry Water,” the Minnesota DNR’s effort to crack down on drunken boating this summer.
We hope you have a fun and safe holiday weekend, but if you find yourself in need of an experienced criminal attorney, don’t hesitate to give Appelman Law Firm a call.
