Recently released statistics show that even in the wake of a rash of criminal activity, violent crime in Minneapolis has dropped dramatically this year.
According to the Minneapolis Police Department statistics, “Part I” crimes, which include both property and violent crimes, are down 16.7 percent compared to this point last year. There have been 12,712 Part I crimes so far this year compared to 15,275 at the same point in 2017.
Drop in Crime
Here’s a closer look at the statistics that highlights which violent crimes are down the most this year:
- Robberies are down 33%
- Aggravated assaults (shootings and stabbings) are down 15%.
- There have been six fewer homicides this year (20 compared to 26).
- Burglaries are down 23%.
- Larcenies are down 15%.
- There have been 17 fewer arson crimes this year (49 compared to 66).
- Property crimes are down 15%.

Sgt. Darcy Horn, a spokesperson for the department, said the drop is a result of hard work from the police department to engage with the community and help deter crime.
“MPD is proud of the partnership we have with members of the community and believe it’s reflected in these numbers that are significant,” said Sgt. Horn.
