You’ve probably heard of some surefire ways to beat a Breathalyzer, but a lot of those methods are actually myths. Sucking on a penny, eating food or chugging mouthwash won’t help you pass a breathalyzer, but there is one method that has been shown to lower your BAC reading.

Hopefully you’re never stuck in Dan’s shoes, but if you end up in a sticky situation it can’t hurt to heed Sarah’s advice. That said, if you know you’re over the legal limit, aside from giving the keys to a friend, refusing to take the breath test is probably your best option. If you blow over the legal limit, you’re handing the prosecutor all the evidence he needs to convict you of driving under the influence. Since the breathalyzer provides a tangible, matter-of-fact measurement that clearly shows whether or not the driver is over the legal limit, this can substantially hurt your case, even if there was other issues with the legitimacy of the traffic stop.
