Despite our many warnings that police would be out in full force looking for drunk drivers, hundreds of Minnesotans were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol over the extended Thanksgiving weekend.
Here’s what we know about the DUI arrests:
- Minnesota police made 137 arrests for driving under the influence on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, which is known in some circles as Blackout Wednesday.
- On a normal Wednesday, police make an average of 47 DUI arrests, so DUI arrests were up nearly three-fold on Thanksgiving Eve.
- As of now, there was one alcohol-related driving fatality, and that happened when an inebriated 59-year-old woman got in an accident after she started driving in the wrong direction.
- Between Wednesday and Saturday morning, Minnesota police had arrested 303 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Fighting A DUI Charge From Thanksgiving Weekend
Our phones were a little busier than normal this weekend, but that’s not out of the ordinary for Thanksgiving weekend. Like we do every year, we worked around the clock to help people who had been arrested or who wanted to secure their release from jail. If you or someone you know still need assistance after an incident over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, be sure to pick up the phone and call Appelman Law Firm today at (952) 224-2277.
We understand that it doesn’t take much to get a DUI, and many people drink alcohol when they are catching up with friends or family over the holiday. Odds are your DUI was an innocent mistake, but that doesn’t mean you should plead guilty and hope the judge goes easy on you. The best way to avoid the problems associated with a drunk driving charge after you’ve been arrested is to challenge the case in court. And the best way to do that is with a professional in your corner.
That’s where Avery comes in. He’ll begin by getting you out of jail and hearing your version of what happened. From there, he’ll begin looking at the police reports, witness statements and dash camera footage to get a clear understanding of how everything went down. During this time he’ll be carefully formulating a defense plan that will put you in a favorable light with the court. He’ll also reach out to the prosecuting attorney to see if a deal can be made to help keep you out of jail or keep your driver’s license, depending on what matters most to you.
If this sounds like something you’d benefit from, call Appelman Law Firm today. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
