New reports have surfaced indicating a startling rise in heroin use throughout central Minnesota. According to DEA agent Brent Fair, heroin has replaced methamphetamine as the most troubling drug of choice.
In the last month alone, there have been 5 overdoses and 2 deaths in the St. Cloud metro. Minnesota-wide, there was a 68% increase in heroin-related hospital treatment from in 2011 from 2010.
Heroin is a Schedule-I classified narcotic: The penalties for possession and sale of any amounts of heroin are very severe. Possession of 25 grams or more of heroin is a first-degree possession charge which carries maximum penalties of 30 years in prison and fines of $1,000,000.
