Picking legal representation can be a daunting process, as this decision could impact the eventual outcome of your case. Oftentimes when choosing a lawyer, a client will set up free consultations with different attorneys to see which one they want to hire. Here are a few things to note during those consultations:
Work Space – Depending on your circumstances, it’s often beneficial to set up a consultation at the lawyer’s office. A person’s workspace often tells a lot about them. Are they organized? Does it look like they’re proud of their work? Does their building have empty offices? Does their office feel warm and welcoming? Look for signs of organization and confidence.
Communication – Having confidence in your lawyer is of the utmost importance. Do they answer their phone? Do they return your calls and answer your messages? If you are not confident in their communication with you, how can you expect them to effectively get your defense across to a judge or jury?
Staff – The type of people someone hires often reverts back to the type of person they are themselves. If the staff are rude, it could be coming from the top down. If the staff are lazy, the lawyer could be too. On the other hand, if the staff are hardworking and kind, the lawyers is likely the same.
Online Presence – Take a quick look at their website and reviews from past clients. Oftentimes, this is the best way to figure out whether or not you want to hire a lawyer. Is their website organized and user friendly? Are the reviews positive or negative? Did the lawyer respond to negative reviews in a positive way? What if there is little to nothing about them online? They may be a new lawyer, which is fine, or they may be disconnected from modern society, which is a bad thing.
General Aura- What feeling do they give off when you meet with them? Are they confident or scatterbrained? Do they greet their staff when they walk past each other? Do they seem rushed or stressed? Do they answer your questions? Do they value your time? In general, gauge how you feel in their presence before hiring them as representation.
