Former Minneapolis Gopher star and current NFL free agent Ra’Shede Hageman was arrested in Minnesota on suspicion of driving under the influence early Saturday morning.
According to the police report, Hageman was stopped along Hwy. 169 near 36th Avenue N. in New Hope. The officer’s report does not say whether they suspected that Hageman was under the influence of alcohol or a different substance, but they felt that they had enough evidence to place the former Gopher under arrest. Hageman was booked into the Hennepin County jail around 2:15 a.m. Saturday morning and charged with 4th Degree Driving While Impaired. He was released less than 90 minutes later without having to post bail.
A court hearing was scheduled for June 21 in Brooklyn Center.
Hageman’s Future Affected By His Past
Hageman is a free agent who is currently looking for a new team, but the latest arrest is only going to make it harder for him to find work. He was a second round pick for the Atlanta Falcons in 2014, but he was released prior to the start of the 2017 season after he was suspended for six games in connection with a domestic violence incident involving his son’s mother.
According to that complaint, Hageman was charged with interfering with a call for emergency help, battery family violence and cruelty to children in the third degree. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges, and according to Hageman, in return for a plea deal the domestic violence count “got dropped from my case,” he announced on Twitter.
The most recent charge will only make it harder for Hageman to land a job in the NFL, even though a 4th Degree Driving While Impaired isn’t all that serious of a DWI charge. A 4th Degree charge means that there were no other aggravating factors present, like a high BAC or a minor in the vehicle. This means Hageman will likely face probation, a fine and a chemical dependency evaluation, but it’s unlikely he’d serve any jail time. With that said, he was already facing an uphill battle to make a roster, and the newest charge isn’t going to win him any favors with NFL general managers.
