The reason George Clooney and his crew went down with the Andrea Gail is because their boat encountered “The Perfect Storm,” and much like the title of that movie, we’re approaching something of a perfect storm here in Minnesota when it comes to drunk driving. A number of factors are converging that could lead to an increase in the number of DUIs we see over the next couple of weeks. We take a look at those factors and explain what you should do if you end up getting arrested for drunk driving in today’s blog.
The Perfect Storm For DUIs
Here’s a look at why we believe we may currently be in a dangerous stretch for DUIs.
St. Patty’s Day – While St. Patrick’s Day is in the rearview mirror, a number of people are now dealing with a DUI in the aftermath of the holiday. Green beer was flowing on Wednesday, and many places still featured St. Patrick’s Day specials this past weekend. If you got caught up in ringing in the holiday with some spirits, you may now have a DUI to show for it.
March Madness – Brackets and drunk drivers will be busted throughout March Madness. Whether you’re watching the game with others at a bar or having some friends over to watch all the madness, make sure everyone has a sober ride home. Police know that the tournament brings people out to the bars, so they’ll be working overtime to keep people from driving drunk.
Spring – Spring is officially here, and that means longer days and better weather. More people will be outside for longer hours, and bar patios will soon make for more COVID-friendly meeting spots. We always notice an uptick in DUIs as the weather gets nicer, and we expect more of the same this year.
COVID – As more people get vaccinated, and as more COVID fatigue sets in, we expect a large amount of people to start heading back out to bars, restaurants, ball games and poker nights. Oftentimes these places and events serve alcohol, and if you’re not careful, you can quickly become over the legal driving limit. Even if you’re only a mile away or a few blocks from home, don’t chance that you’ll be able to make it if you’re over the limit.
As all four of those factors converge, we expect to see a surge in DUIs over the next few weeks. Police are also aware of these factors, and they be conducting extra enforcement measures over the next few weeks. So if you think you can get away with drinking and driving, think again.
