Nearly 200 Minnesotans started the new year with some regrets after being arrested for DWI over the holiday weekend.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a total of 199 motorists across the state were arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated between 6 p.m. on Friday and 6 a.m. on Monday.
“Too many Minnesotans rang in the New Year behind bars after making a dangerous choice to get behind the wheel after drinking,” reads a post from the State Patrol Department’s Facebook page. “Drive sober, drive smart.”
The 199 DWI arrests over the New Year’s holiday weekend marks a significant uptick from year’s past. There were 111 arrests over New Year’s in 2019, and 138 arrests in 2020, although it’s worth noting that the DWI enforcement crackdown was extended throughout the weekend this year because New Year’s Eve fell on a Friday. Still, that’s far too many people to be arrested for drunk driving, especially when we had issued numerous warnings that police would be out in full force looking for inebriated drivers throughout the holiday weekend.
If You’re Facing A DWI Charge
If you or someone you know is facing a DWI charge from New Year’s or another incident, it’s imperative that you reach out to a lawyer sooner rather than later. A DWI can have severe consequences, including but not limited to significant fines, loss of driving privileges, jail time and insurance premium increases, all of which can total more than $10,000 in expenses.
If you made a mistake and got behind the wheel after drinking, don’t make another mistake and plead guilty and ask the judge for leniency. If you want the best chance at getting the charges reduce or dropped, or to get a fair sentence in the event that you are found or plead guilty, you need to sync up with a lawyer. Avery Appelman and the team at Appelman Law Firm have more than two decades of experience fighting and winning DWI cases in the Twin Cities and the surrounding suburbs, and he understands that one mistake shouldn’t affect you for the rest of your life.
