An ignition interlock device (IID) allows an individual convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol to retain some driving privileges in lieu of going an extended period without a valid driver’s license. As we’ve talked about in different blogs in the past, ignition interlock devices are pretty easy to install and can make it much easier for you to get around or maintain employment after a DUI.
These devices are typically installed in cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans, but what if you drive a motorcycle? Can you have your motorcycle outfitted with an IID and keep riding in Minnesota? We explore the answer to that question and more in today’s blog.
IID On A Motorcycle
Are you allowed to have an ignition interlock device installed on your motorcycle after a DUI in Minnesota? Every state is different when it comes to IID laws and how these devices operate. Some only require an IID to be used when starting the vehicle, while others require that the driver provide additional samples while the vehicle is in motion. As you can imagine, this process would be quite unsafe for a motorcycle rider. This is one of the main reasons why ignition interlock devices cannot be installed on motorcycles in Minnesota.
In fact, there are a whole slew of transportation options that cannot have ignition interlock devices installed on them. Those include:
- Motorcycles
- Recreational vehicles
- Motor homes
- Mopeds
- Scooters
- Commercial vehicles
So while it may be a requirement to install an ignition interlock devices on all vehicles that you own if you have been convicted of a DUI and want to keep driving, know that law doesn’t apply to the above modes of transportation. This doesn’t mean that you can get around on those transportation devices as you wish after a DUI, rather you need to abstain from using these methods in order to be in compliance with your sentencing. If you are caught driving one of these vehicles, the fact that it is not eligible for an IID will not save you. You will be charged with a criminal offense if found to be operating a vehicle that is not equipped with an IID as required after a DUI.
