Police throughout the state of Minnesota will be conducting a DUI crackdown over the next two weeks during the final stages of the “100 deadliest days on the roads” campaign.
The 100 deadliest days campaign occurs each year between Memorial Day and Labor Day, which is usually the deadliest stretch on Minnesota roads. This period is deadly for a number of reasons:
- The stretch of days includes three holiday weekends, and holiday weekends can involve more alcohol consumption.
- The warm weather means more people are outside, at the bars and on the roads.
- The ideal road conditions allow people to travel at faster speeds, which can be deadly in the event of a crash.
Surprisingly, even though it doesn’t contain any deadly holidays like New Year’s Eve or St. Patrick’s Day, August is typically the most deadly month on Minnesota roads. Over the past five years, August has been the month with the most drunken drivings arrests as well. More than 2,500 people have been arrested for driving under the influence in Minnesota during the month of August over the last five years. In that same period, there have been 462 drunken-driving-related deaths.
