Every country has crime, but some countries experience more than others. If you’re trying to find an exotic destination to travel to, you might want to take extra precautions if you’re thinking about heading to any of these areas. There are plenty of safe destinations in every country, but you need to be aware of some of the risks each country poses to travelers. Today, we take a look at the 10 countries riddled with the most crime.
Top 10 Crime-Ridden Countries
Each country was evaluated on a few different factors to determine their rank. The four factors were:
- United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime statistical reports
- National Crime Index Reports
- Reports on National Corruption
- Reports of non-government paramilitary actions
After looking at these factors, here’s how the countries stack up, with a “fun fact” about each country.

9. Brazil – Brazil has one of the highest murder rates in the world, at about 30 in every 100,000 inhabitants.
8. El Salvador – El Salvador makes Brazil look like paradise. Due to rampant gang violence, the murder rate in El Salvador is roughly 90 out of 100,000 inhabitants.
