Speeding Minnesota
If you have a speeding ticket, you're probably wondering whether or not you need an attorney. Speeding is typically a petty misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $300 with no possibility of jail time.
Depending on the degree and combination of the charges, the fines and punishments can quickly escalate. The fines rise if the speeding violation occurs in a work or school zone, if the speed is 20 miles or more above the speed limit, or if it occurs when passing a parked emergency vehicle with the lights on. A speeding ticket can be charged as a misdemeanor if it is committed in a manner that endangers persons or property.
If you are convicted of a misdemeanor speeding ticket, you could face a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and 90 days' imprisonment. It is also important to note that a driver's license will be revoked for at least six months for anyone convicted of driving over 100 MPH. Some speeding tickets won't go on your driving record.
Speeding violations are not placed on the driving record if the driver was traveling:
No more than 10 M.P.H. above the speed limit in a 55 M.P.H. zone; or
No more than 5 M.P.H. above the speed limit in a 60 M.P.H. zone.
